StreetFighter Legacy has been a labour of love and passion project for its creator, Joey Ansah, who not only conceived and pitched the project, but also co-directed, co-wrote and choreographed it, alongside cameo’ing in the film. Collaborating, creative partner and long time friend Christian Howard was part of the project from day one, co-writing the script and story elements, as well as further down the line, storyboarding the film, being assistant fight choreographer and most importantly playing Ken Masters.

Streetlight repped Australian Director Owen Trevor came onboard to co-direct the film. His experience and style carried forward from shooting on 3 series of the acclaimed ‘Top Gear’ have really been an asset to the project and given it a strong visual flair.

When I look back at Turtles in Time I see some of my greatest times spent playing games. With it’s fun and challenging game play(for my age anyways), amazing cooperative play, and the fact that it is a licensed game of the greatest four heroes of all time, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time was one for the ages. With all of that in mind, you cannot imagine the way I felt when it was announced that a remake of the game was going to be launched on the Xbox Live Arcade, it was like the god of all things 16-bit and good decided to poop out a turd of gold. I bought this game the second I could at what I thought was a solid price of around $10. I waited patiently for it to download and jumped right in.

The very first thing I noticed was the graphics, and why the graphics you may ask, everyone knows that games are all about the game play, but this is different. They gave the game an visual overhaul including the opening intro that I remember as a kid. All the old enemies and boss make a brightly colored comeback into the new generation and look just like you all remember them. The game does a good job of bringing back what you remember, but adding some oomph to it.

So like I said, graphically, this game has it down. Awesome to look at, but when the final horse comes limping around the last turn like something is stuck up it’s butt, is the game actually fun? Well, not really. The first level of the game is the same as the original, you are on a bridge fighting your way through tons of ninjas to get to a strange boss that flies around with some kinda of gun that can punch you and let me tell you, it’s repetitive. Now maybe the game has not held up well over the years but it just does not feel like last time I put that old cartridge in. I felt bored and as if I could be doing something a little less tedious.

Now I don’t want to say that the game is awful, because quite simply it isn’t. Let me throw out some of the positive qualities about it; You can play of one of the four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles we all love, each with his own special attributes that make him play different, whether it be speed, power, or whatever else. They’ve added some difficulties and features (achievements are always nice) in as well to keep you playing. Four player online cooperative play is a huge bonus as well. Lastly, of course, nostalgia is the greatest quality of the game.

I guess at the end of the day, the game is not what it use to be, but with it’s update graphics and beat’em up gameplay it does play well, whilst bringing back the memories. If you are a nostalgia whore like me, check out the trial version on the Xbox Live Arcade and go from there, otherwise just go play Call of Duty you losers.

Edward VS Tellah

Chances are if you grew up in the 90s, weren’t living in a 3rd world country, and aren’t one of the Bali Nine (…?) you will have at least played Super Mario on the Super Nintendo (SNES). The SNES was one of the few great inventions of man, and at the forefront of all it has done for the gaming world was the SNES Role Playing Game (RPG). To the modern day RPG there has never been anything as game changing (ha-ha!) as the development during this time (there’s something about floating blocks of colour spouting epic nonsense that’s strangely compelling). So many titles were released in this period, so many game changing (>_<) developments were made that I will attempt to abridge the list to the absolute best and most defining titles.

Disclaimer: Before I continue I feel obliged to warn you that this article is a steaming mass of self satisfying nostalgia, extreme(ly bad) writing skillz, and nonsensical fangirl whining.

Final Fantasy IV

Kain in all his errotic fury

In my opinion this was the first truly awesome Final Fantasy title ever released. It is what shaped the ‘formula’ of the average RPG and secured Final Fantasy a place in history forever. This was actually the 3rd RPG I ever played and it cast a pretty big shadow over any future FF releases for me.
Note: Jumping around with Dragoon Kain was the best part of the game.

Tales of Phantasia

Quick get it before it stings you!

Without a doubt one of the greatest titles of the SNES. It featured a revolutionary 2D ‘real time’ battle system that would later become the base of the Star Ocean battle system. You can track many of the modern day ‘real time’ battle systems back to this point in gaming history. A great part of this game is the humor, the writers really weren’t afraid to push the boundaries of the time. Perhaps that’s just what comes from being Japanese though.
Note: Dhaos is a big fat hippy.

Final Fantasy V

Oh look more bees!

This game actually didn’t have that great a storyline, it had no revolutionary battle system, and no amazing character development, so why is it here? Simple! It had the best ‘Jobs/Skill’ system I’ve ever seen. It allowed you to allocate characters a job (ie: white mage, black mage, theif) and level them in that profession. Want to change job? Sure! Just change jobs and level your new job’s attributes up. You can change and change back whenever you like depending on your parties requirements.
Note: Butz is a stupid name.

Chrono Trigger

We all had a secret crush on Lucca

Most RPG gamers will tell you this is one of their all time favourites. The main selling point of the game is the epic storyline and character development. I can’t actually remember too much about it, which doesn’t strike me as a good thing; perhaps at the time we were all just sick of captured princesses and crying emos.
Note: I always thought Lucca was hot.

Secret of Evermore

Before I shoot you with my bazooka, yes, I have a bazooka...

This game was probably the best game to come out on the SNES. It was so complete, the story was great, the character development was awesome, for the time the graphics were outstanding, the items system was fun and the battle system rocked. Instead of transporting you to a designated battle screen, battles actually took place real time in a similar fashion to many adventure games of the time. It also featured an alchemy system where you could make items with recipes, as far as I know this was the first game to do that (correct me if I’m wrong).
Note: Your dog is fuckin awesome

If you haven’t played any one of these titles you need to get off your ass and procure a copy of them somehow.
